Brian Aldiss goes Weird 22/04/2004 . Source: Jessica Martin
BBC Radio 4 to broadcast new science fiction show 'Weird Science'. Can it be true? Yes indeed. In Weird Science, long time literary science fiction author, Brian Aldiss, is due to examine the social history of science fiction on the radio and ask: Does science fiction hold a mirror up to progress?
In an archive hour replete with SF radio drama, satire, commercials and music selected by producer Frank Stirling, BBC listeners will hear some of the roots and history from which science fiction sprang.
It will be exploring how SF has often held up a mirror to current events, both reflecting major contemporary preoccupations and attempting to discern the future. 'Weird Science' tells the story of the influence of science fiction radio and its place in the modern world it tries to explain.
Brian Aldiss introduces a blend of entertainment and argument that ranges from Buck Rogers and The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy to Brave New World and Slaughterhouse Five with archive comment from an eclectic array of writers that includes Isaac Asimov, Kurt Vonnegut, Douglas Adams and Christopher Isherwood.
Set your Radio 4 clocks for Saturday, 15th May 2004 - Time: 20.00 - 21.00.
