Science Fiction in a Suitcase?
06/04/2004 Source: Jessica Martin

British theatre company Battered Suitcase extracts the urine from old pulp serials like Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers.

Crash Morgan and the Curse of the Lost Totem is, like its prequels Crash Morgan versus the Spider Warlords of Mars and Crash Morgan and the Conquest of the Spider Warlords of Mars, a pastiche of radio serials of the forties and fifties.

It was originally staged as a full play before evolving into its present form - the recreation of live broadcast of a show that never was.

In this latest production you can thrill to the adventures of the nation's Greatest Son - Crash Morgan, Special Agent F.B.I., Test Pilot and Football Hero! (not soccer, we suspect).

Can he triumph over the millennia spanning evil of the Mummy Tuhk-An-Khum and prevent the twisted genius Herakles Strauss from creating an army of Nazi zombie supermen? Will the shady Hamish Farouk prove his Friend or Foe, and will he be able to resist the evil lures of the enthralling Contessa de D'urbervilles?

Can he win back the heart of his estranged sweetheart Glenn Fairweather of the London English Evening Post, or will he lose her forever to her childhood sweetheart Willoughby Carstairs of British Intelligence?

To find out, you'll need to get yourself over to Portsmouth next month.

Tuesday 4th & Wednesday 5th May, 7.30pm
The Third Floor Arts Centre, Central Library, Guildhall Walk, Portsmouth
box office 023 9268 8070

and

Monday 10th and Tuesday 11th May, 7.30pm
The Lion and the Unicorn
42 Gaisford Street, Kentish Town, London

Battered Suitcase is of course probably best known for its three Doctor Who stage shows Hellblossom, Vox Dei and Warsmith.

Details of previous performances are available online at their site, along with a mock history of the Crash character from his creation in 1931, a six page full colour comic strip and streaming audio of their most recent performance.
