Isabella Rossellini Casts Spell on 'Earthsea'
12/03/2004 Source: Jessica Martin

Actress signs on for SCI-FI Channel's Ursula K. Le Guin fantasy miniseries.

SCI FI Channel has signed actress Isabella Rossellini in the pivotal role of the High Priestess Thar for their upcoming original fantasy series, Earthsea.

A four-hour coming-of-age fantasy, the miniseries will premiere as a two-night television event on SCI FI in December 2004.

Produced by Hallmark Entertainment in association with Bender-Brown Productions, Earthsea is written by Gavin Scott (The Mists of Avalon) and executive produced by Robert Halmi, Sr. (Dreamkeeper, Merlin), Lawrence Bender (Kill Bill, Pulp Fiction) and Kevin Brown (Roswell).

Adapted from Ursula K. Le Guin's "Earthsea" novels, the fantasy follows the tale of a reckless youth destined to become the greatest sorcerer that the mystical land of Earthsea has ever known.

When the young wizard Ged discovers that he possesses infinite magical powers, he seeks to master the ancient arts. As he journeys to manhood, he will combat dragons, rescue a princess, fall in love, cross death's threshold, and ultimately wield the power to reunite a kingdom.

Still popular with readers of all ages, Le Guin has received verious awards, including five Hugo Awards, Five Nebula Awards, and the National Book Award. The Earthsea books have been translated into 16 languages, with millions of copies in print.

Known for a range of television and film roles, Isabella Rossellini first captured the public's attention with her sultry portrayal of a night club singer in David Lynch's "Blue Velvet" (1986). Since then she has appeared in movies such as "Death Becomes Her" (1992), "Immortal Beloved" (1994), "The Odyssey" (1997), and "Rodger Dodger" (2002). She made her American stage debut this year in Terrence McNally's "The Stendhal Syndrome."
