William Gibson's Pattern Recognition makes the 2003 British Science Fiction Association awards shortlist. The shortlists for the 2003 British Science Fiction Association (BSFA) awards have just been announced. And the Nest's tip for the top? It has to be Absolution Gap by local chappie Alastair Reynolds.
BEST NOVEL
- Pattern Recognition by William Gibson (Viking)
- Felaheen by Jon Courtenay Grimwood (Earthlight)
- Midnight Lamp by Gwyneth Jones (Gollancz SF)
- Absolution Gap by Alastair Reynolds (Gollancz SF)
- Natural History by Justina Robson (Macmillan)
- Maul by Tricia Sullivan (Orbit)
There are six novels on this shortlist because there was a tie for the number of nominations received for fifth place.
BEST SHORT FICTION:

The awards will be presented on Sunday 11th April 2004 (Easter Sunday), during the British national science fiction convention, Concourse, at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool.
The shortlists for the awards were compiled from nominations submitted by members of the BSFA; they will be voted on by BSFA members and by attending members of the convention.
Eligibility for the 2003 awards is defined as follows:
-- The Best Novel award is open to any novel-length work of science fiction or fantasy first published in the UK in 2003. (Serialised novels are eligible provided that the publication date of the concluding part is in 2003.)
-- The Best Short Fiction award is open to any shorter work of science fiction or fantasy, up to and including novellas, first published in 2003 (in a magazine, in a book, or online).
-- The Best Artwork award is open to any single image of science fiction or fantasy artwork that first appeared in 2003.
-- The Best Non-Fiction award is open to any single piece of critical writing about science fiction or fantasy that was first published in 2003. (This would include a review or an article in a magazine or journal, on paper or online; an essay included in an anthology or collection; or a single book-length work.)
-- Additionally, works published by the BSFA itself (whether in book form, on the website, or in one of the magazines) are *not* eligible for the awards.
