Science Museum Prices out Clarke Award

More bad luck ... the UK's Science Museum hits the Clarkes with a 700% price rise. The Science Museum has just announced that the cost of hiring the venue for the 2004 Clarke Award ceremony will rise by 700%.
Having provided the facilities free of charge from 1996 until 2002, the Museum suddenly made a charge of £1,000 in 2003. They have now informed the Clarke Award crew that the cost of facilities for the 2004 ceremony would be in excess of £7,000. This is in addition to the cost of catering.
The Museum says this is because of funding problems. However, the award's own funding difficulties, exacerbated by the £1,000 charge in 2003, mean that this cost is now totally beyond their means.
The Clarke Award ceremony will therefore not be held at the Science Museum this year.
They are already looking for other suitable venues, and hope to stage the award ceremony in May as usual.
The award administrator Paul Kincaid has also taken the first step to preserve the Clarke Award by establishing the Serendip Foundation.
The Serendip Foundation is a non-profit-making organisation that will manage the Clarke Award from now on. Paul is still finalising exact details of the Serendip Foundation's remit, but it will handle all their financial affairs, including fund-raising.
The Serendip Foundation currently consists of Paul Kincaid, the award administrator, Maureen Kincaid Speller, Paul and Elizabeth Billinger, Simon Bradshaw, Andrew M. Butler and Angie Edwards.
