PS Publishing to raise US$ prices
17/12/2004 Source: Jessica Martin

SFF publisher PS Publishing are one of the many firms to have been hit by the terrible US exchange rate.

News just in from Pete over at PS. In his own words:

"I fear that, with effect from 1 January 2005, we're going to have to hike the costs of the novella line for our dollar-paying customers. And believe me, this is something I have fought off doing for several years now... but we just can't avoid it any longer.

When we started PS (December 1998), the exchange rate to the pound was a little over US$1.60 - thus our novella line, for example, has always retailed at £25/$40 for the hardcovers and £10/$16 (it used to be £8/$14) for the paperbacks. This past few days has seen the rate continue its six-year upward spiral to above the $1.90 mark... with, apparently, no ceiling in sight.

It doesn't require a degree in advanced math to see that we can't continue keeping the dollar amounts on our titles at their current levels. I've been expecting (hoping? praying?) that things would settle down again but there are no signs of that. Thus, at the start of the new year, we'll be changing our pricing structure (for existing titles and stock, as well as for new titles), but only to an exchange rate of $1.80 and, even then, only for the novellas.

So, from 1 January 2005, the prices will be:

£25/$45 for the hardcovers (instead of £25/$40)
£10/$18 for the paperbacks (instead of £10/$16)

We're going to leave the prices on the trade and slipcased hardcover editions of the bigger books alone, although we'll probably re-visit the situation next summer. Meanwhile, if the exchange rate drops significantly - or shows signs of dropping significantly - then we'll hold off making the changes."
