Science Fiction Museum to induct its first Hall of Fame Class
27/02/2005 Source: Jessica Martin

The Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame (SFM), the world's first science fiction museum, has announced the date for its first Hall of Fame Induction ceremony: Friday, May 6, 2005, at EMP's Sky Church.

The Science Fiction Hall of Fame honors the lives, works and legacies of science fiction's creators. Founded in 1996, the Hall of Fame was relocated from Kansas City to its permanent home at SFM in 2004. The Class of 2005 will represent SFM's first Hall of Fame induction and will include four new members.

"We are excited to host our first induction ceremony at SFM and honor the legends that have shaped the field of science fiction," said Bob Santelli, director of SFM programs and chair of the Hall of Fame executive committee. "And, we are pleased to open up the nomination process to our members."

SFM Members, who make up the Hall of Fame Academy, are invited to nominate potential inductees for the Class of 2005 in the following categories: literature, art, media and other. While only literary creators were honored previously, beginning this year, nominees are being accepted for a broadened range of creative endeavors. Nominations are underway now through Feb. 28. Inductees will be announced in early April.

Each year, the Hall of Fame inducts four individuals on the basis of their continued excellence and contributions to science fiction. Current inductees include such well-known figures as Ray Bradbury, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Sir Arthur C. Clarke, Jules Verne and H.G. Wells.

As part of the induction, a new mini-exhibit featuring personal artifacts and video footage from each inductee will be added to the existing Hall of Fame exhibit. The new inductees will also be featured in laser-etched images on the translucent, glowing Hall of Fame display.

Tickets for the induction ceremony are $85 and available for purchase on March 29 for members and April 1 for the general public. The evening includes a seated ceremony, dinner and after-party.
