Sleeper, Awake
22/02/2005 Source: Jessica Martin

Frozen in suspended animation for fifteen hundred years, the sleeper is awake. A new world emerges, a world of only one million people, all have material wealth-it is a world where the right to reproduce has become a valuable commodity.

Dr. Bob Rich is the Australian author of 'Sleeper, Awake'. Double Dragon Publishing launched 'Sleeper, Awake', and Dr. Bob recently won a EPPIE Award for the electronic novel.

The author was asked what inspired him to write from the realms of science fiction.

"Sleeper, Awake was my first organically grown book. Until then I had meticulously plotted every story. Inspiration for the novel came from the way we are wrecking our world. We are heading for a major environmental disaster, so I asked, 'If some people survive, and use the opportunity to build a society that avoids the same mistakes, what would it be like?'

I discovered a crippled genius-who right now is hiding in a cave somewhere in Canada, creating the new world order. I didn't want horror. I wanted a fun book. I decided on a witness: A woman who went into cryogenic storage to escape cancer-and awoke 1433 years later. From there on, I didn't know what she'd find until she encountered it.

The world of the future avoids war and strife, all forms of violence, by using other forms of outlet for aggressive competitiveness-deeds of daring. Men must engage in order to win the favor of women. Everyone has all the wealth imaginable-the only thing in short supply is the right to have children. A father is chosen by the mother, and women rule this world."

Dr. Bob is also a psychologist, and added, "My popular psychological self-help book 'Anger and Anxiety: Be in charge of your emotions and control phobias' has been reissued by Twilight Times Books."
