Against literary snobbery
17/03/2005 Source: Jessica Martin

Joe from the Forbidden Planet writes in to complain about snobbery against science fiction award winners.

Joe Gordon dropped the Nest a line to vent his feelings about the literary mafia's attempts to pretend the SFF genre doesn't exist!

"I'm just writing to let you know that Forbidden Planet International are getting behind this year's excellent crop of nominees for the BSFA and Arthur C Clarke awards," says Joe. "We've been promoting them on our blog and our on-line webstore and a number of our branches - Glasgow, Manchester, Hanley, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Belfast, Dublin, Nottingham, Derby and Wolverhampton - are promoting both awards in-store."

"I know from my own experience of working for mainstream bookstores that they generally ignore the BSFA and Arthur C Clarke awards, despite running campaigns on almost every other literary prize (a position made more ridiculous by the fact that one nominee this year is was a Booker shortlist title)."

He goes on to say, "I've never worked out if this was due to literary snobbery or simply not understanding (or choosing not to understand) our preferred genre. I've always tried to highlight the quality and diversity of the titles nominated each year in the SF section of my old bookstore and now I'm delighted to say FPI are right behind this - all of the nominees are listed and reviewed online and will be represented in the stores listed above - and we're offering 25% off each nominee - on the webstore and the participating branches -because we believe good SF&F literature should be read and shared."
