Anne McCaffrey is the Master
21/03/2005 Source: Jessica Martin

Author Anne McCaffrey to be presented with the Nebula Grand Master Award at the Nebula Awards weekend April 28th-May 1st 2005.

McCaffrey joins previous Del Rey winners Arthur C. Clarke, Ray Bradbury, Lester del Rey, Frederik Pohl and Robert A. Heinlein

Anne McCaffrey is known for her hard work in bringing new readers into the genre as well as nurturing the careers of many writers. Her career spans nearly forty years and has broken new ground in the genres of both science fiction and fantasy, for adults and young people alike.

It began with the publication of the novella "Weyr Search," (1967), and includes over seventy novels and several short story collections. In 1968 and 1969, "Weyr Search," the initial story in the Dragonriders of Pern series, won a Nebula and a Hugo for Best Novella, marking the first time a woman has received a Hugo for fiction.

She has received the Writers of the Future Life Time Achievement Award, the HOMer award, and the Science Fiction Book Club's Book of the Year. Her 1978 novel THE WHITE DRAGON established another milestone: it was the first science fiction novel to make the New York Times hardcover bestseller list.

In 1999, she became the first science fiction writer to win the American Library Association's coveted Margaret A. Edwards Award, a lifetime achievement award that honors an author's work in helping adolescents become aware of themselves and addressing questions about their role and importance in relationships, society, and in the world.
