2005 Seiun Awards 06/03/2005 . Source: Jessica Martin
Cascadia Con is to announce the presentation of the 2005 Seiun Awards for best Foreign Language Translation into Japanese. Two of Japan's top honors in Science Fiction, the Seiun Awards for the Best Foreign-Language Novel and Short story translated into Japanese will be awarded at Cascadia Con's Gala Awards Banquet co-sponsored by The Heinlein Society, to be held at the Hilton Hotel and Conference Center in SeaTac, WA. on Sunday 9/4/2005.
The Seiun Awards are voted on by the attendees of the Japanese National Science Fiction Convention for works translated into Japanese and are normally re-announced and presented at the World Science Fiction convention.
This year the North American Science Fiction Convention has announced that they have the privilege of including the presentation of the Seiun Awards during their banquet on Sunday night at Cascadia Con, September 1st- 5th, 2005.
The Cascadia Con banquet will feature North American awards such as the Heinlein Awards, and the Golden Duck awards. The conventions guests of honor and many of the professional writers, publishers, artists and scientists will be present at the banquet.
Cascadia Con is also hosting as a guest of honor the Chairman of the World Science Fiction Convention to be held in Yokohama, Japan in 2007, Hiroaki Inoue. He will participate with Cascadia Con in exploring Science Fiction and Fantasy in Japanese literature, Manga and film.
There is such a close tie that frequently goes unmentioned between Science Fiction, Fantasy and Anime, with thousands of great pieces going largely ignored by the American Science Fiction and Fantasy communities.
This thought is shared by the Japanese Association for Science Fiction International Communication (JASFIC); "...when you look at the foreign country, although the Japanese animation work is being acknowledged, the Japanese SF novel which is the starting point is almost unknown ..."
Cascadia Con hopes to help change this in the future.
Cascadia Con is the 8th North American Science Fiction Convention (NASFiC) in 30 years. A NASFiC is only held when the Worldcon for that year is outside of North America. In 2005 the Worldcon will be in Scotland and Seattle will host the NASFiC. Cascadia Con will be host to a variety of professional writers, artists, scientists, teachers, futurists and musicians as well as Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Anime aficionados. Cascadia Con is a 100% volunteer run organization and a fully qualified 501c3 company.
