Broderick enters the Cosmos 18/06/2005 . Source: Jessica Martin
One of Australia's most renowned science fiction writers, Damien Broderick, has been appointed fiction editor of Cosmos magazine. Broderick, the winner of four Ditmar Awards (Australia's highest accolade for science fiction writing), is credited with inventing the term "virtual reality" and was this year honoured with the Distinguished Scholarship Award from the International Association for the Fantastic in the Arts.
Some of the world's biggest names in the genre have been commissioned by Broderick to write short fiction for Cosmos, which will be paying some of the highest rates for original science fiction in the world. The premiere issue of Cosmos (July 2005) goes on sale at newsagents on June 22nd 2005 down under.
"Damien is a talented and thoughtful writer, who is internationally respected in the science fiction community," said Wilson da Silva, editor of Cosmos. "This is a well-regarded and profitable fiction genre overseas. We mean to develop the genre locally, as well as bring some of the best of global science fiction writing to Australian readers."
"Science fiction used to be a cult appetite," says Broderick. "That's all changed, judging by the extraordinary tally of movie-goers attending films like Star Wars, who have made the genre the most profitable in history.
"Science fiction is the language we use to discuss the surprising present and the emerging future. I mean to bring the best of this new writing, by talented Australians as well as by famous writers from the rest of the world, to the readers of Cosmos."
The first issue will republish a classic short story by genre master Ray Bradbury. This will be followed by a stellar cast of science fiction writers, some of the most notable of whom are Australians.
As well as a writer and editor of more than 30 books, Broderick is a futurist and a senior research fellow at the University of Melbourne, holding a doctorate in the comparative semiotics of science and literature. Awarded fellowships by the Literature Board of the Australia Council six times, he currently lives in Melbourne and San Antonio, Texas.
Among his novels is the award-winning "The Dreaming Dragons", listed as one of the top 100 science fiction novels in English published since Orwell's "Nineteen Eighty-Four". His new novel is "Godplayers", just published by Thunder's Mouth Books in New York, while the sequel, "K-Machines", is due next year.
