There's a whole new Cosmos out there

Australia gets a new glossy popular science magazine. Cosmos, Australia's first popular monthly science magazine will be launched in June 2005.
"There is strong demand for science in television, books, radio and online - but no Australian science magazine to address this market," Kylie Ahern, the mag's publisher, said. "More than 1.5 million Australians watch or listen to a science program on television or radio every week. Science news websites are among the highest rating and science books often dominate the non-fiction category. In magazines, there are niche titles and imported publications, but nothing in the top 100."
"There's a gap in the magazine industry for a title that encapsulates 'science for everyone', and that's where Cosmos comes in. We will meet the needs of the consumer and close this gap, developing a rich new category in magazine publishing," said Ms Ahern.
Created by the new publishing company, Luna Media Pty Ltd, Cosmos deals with ideas, science, technology and the future. Its slogan is "the science of everything" - from human biology and medicine, the environment, archaeology, space and astronomy, to information technology, society and social research.
Editor, Mr Wilson da Silva, said: "It is true that good science journalism is harder to do: you have to be committed to quality and to getting it right. Most publishers are intimidated by the topic."
Cosmos will be a glossy title with high production values and a focus on top-quality writing, photography and illustrations - a feast for the brain and the eyes.
"Every issue of Cosmos will explore who we are and what we might become, our place in the world and our future on the planet," da Silva said.
"It's time consumers had a quality Australian science magazine that appeals to a broad range of people."
Every month, Cosmos will take readers on a journey of intrigue. Will we ever have robot lovers? Why do we sleep? Can we live forever? Will men ever give birth? What's it like to walk on the Moon? Does changing perfumes really discourage infidelity? When will cars drive themselves? Can we holiday in space - and what will they be like?
To be a Cosmos reader is to be fascinated by the world, excited about new ideas and intrigued by new possibilities.
Cosmos will publish 11 times a year with a double issue in December/January. Stories will be penned by some of the world's finest writers, including sci-fi novelist Bruce Sterling, futurist Damien Broderick, and Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin.
Other regular features will include interviews, photo essays, a travel section, book and movie reviews, new gadgets, humour and an opinion page.
