Arthur C Clarke Award rattles the collection tin 01/09/2005 . Source: Jessica Martin
A new fund raising effort for the Arthur C Clarke Award has been launched for 2005. Looks good too. Supporters of Serendip - named for Serendip Foundation, the organisation that now runs the Clarke Award - gives individuals and organisations the opportunity to make a regular donation that will help to keep the Award alive.
Ever since Rocket Publishing withdrew funding in 2003, the Award has been operating on a shoestring. Although the Award has now secured a promise of £1,000 a year for the next five years from the Science Fiction Foundation, this is not enough to keep the Award going. Supporters of Serendip (SoS) is a way of keeping going while sponsorship is being sought.
SoS is offering three levels of support. Mercury Supporter for donations up to £25: names of supporters will be featured on the web site (www.clarkeaward.com) and at the Award ceremony, and they will receive an annual newsletter.
Gemini Supporter for donations up to £100: in addition to the above, they will receive an invitation to an exclusive supporters-only party for the announcement of the shortlist, and they will receive a discount of £2 off The Arthur C Clarke Award: A Critical Anthology, due to be published in January 2006.
Apollo Supporter for donations over £100: in addition to the above they will receive an exclusive invitation to the annual Award Ceremony, plus other benefits to be announced later.
Anyone wishing to become a Supporter should contact Elizabeth Billinger, Serendip Foundation, 1 Long Row Close, Everdon, Daventry, Northants NN11 3BE.
The leaflet announcing Supporters of Serendip can be found over at http://www.appomattox.demon.co.uk/acca/News/SoS.htm
