New CBBC controller Alison Sharman has made her first Sunday teatime drama commission with an adaptation of Terry Pratchett's novel, Johnny and the Bomb. Buy Johnny and the Bomb in the USA - or Buy Johnny and the Bomb in the UK  Starring Zoe Wanamaker, Frank Finlay and Keith Barron, Johnny and the Bomb comes from the makers of the award-winning CBBC dramas Feather Boy and Stig of the Dump.
Also in the cast are John Henshaw (Early Doors) and Felicity Montagu (Alan Partridge). When Johnny Maxwell and his friends come across mysterious old bag lady Mrs Tachyon in an alleyway, they soon realise there is more to her than a squeaky trolley and a bunch of black bags.
As Johnny gets to know her, he realises that she holds the key to different times - including the Blackbury Blitz of 1941. Suddenly now isn't the safe place he once thought it was as he finds himself caught up more and more with then.
CBBC Controller Alison Sharman told the 'Nest: "I'm thrilled that Terry Pratchett has agreed to let CBBC adapt his best-selling and much-loved Johnny and the Bomb for television.
"It's a hugely entertaining story, and has attracted a magnificent cast. In the hands of producer Peter Tabern and director Dermot Boyd, it promises to make a truly memorable serial."
The third title in Pratchett's Johnny Maxwell trilogy, Johnny and the Bomb has been adapted for television by Peter Tabern, winner of an International Emmy and the Bafta Children's Writer award for his adaptation of Stig of the Dump in 2001.
Executive produced for the BBC by Head of CBBC Drama, Jon East, Johnny and the Bomb is being filmed on location in South Wales. It is being produced for the BBC by Childsplay Television and is written and produced by Peter Tabern, and directed by Dermot Boyd.
