Abaddon Press - more details
11/10/2005 Source: Jessica Martin

More on Abaddon Press's plans to launch a new genre imprint dedicated to publishing high-action science fiction, horror and fantasy. Abaddon Press will be an imprint of Rebellion, the publishers of the comic 2000AD and its sister publication The Judge Dredd Megazine.

Their new publishing arm will not use 2000 AD based properties.

Abaddon Press aim to provide books that will appeal to fans of cult entertainment and genre fiction. Typically age ratings for their fiction are 15+, although some of their books will rate older than that.

They told SFcrowsnest.com they are looking for zesty, exciting, action-driven genre fiction that is intelligently written and compelling. Abaddon Press said they like books like David Gemmel's Legend, Stan Nichol's Orcs series, Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake books, Fritz Leiber's Swords saga and David Weber's Honor Harrington novels.

Abaddon Press have a variety of intellectual properties and worlds that Abaddon Press are seeking to develop into on-going series of novels.

Post-apocalyptic survival Science-Fiction/Horror: The majority of human civilisation has been wiped out. Abaddon Press follow a small band of survivors as they try to come to terms with a devastated world.

Space/Time Slip: This should involve armies from various points in human history being taken out of their own time and environment and transplanted to an entirely alien world. For example, a unit of 14th century longbow men find themselves split from their regiment. They wander through an increasingly unfamiliar landscape, they hear a strange sound on the horizon and reach the crest of a hill to look down on a vast but primitive alien army.

Undead Horror: The dead walk, they are here and all humanity struggles under their weight. They are looking for interesting takes on the zombie story. They can be slow, shambling rotting horrors, fast and rabid flesh eaters or the product of powerful necromancy or something else entirely.

High Fantasy/Sword and Sorcery: They are looking to develop a fantasy series packed full of action and magic. The story should have a small ensemble cast of memorable characters whose lives and loves can be explored in further books. The publisher would like to see fiction that is full of clashing swords, clashing wits and mysterious and powerful forces.

If you are interested any of these properties you can contact the firm at the address below. Abaddon Press are also looking to develop further properties and can provide the interested author with various other scenarios currently in development. Original ideas are also welcome.

Their books are written as work-for-hire. Copyright of material will be assigned to the imprint. If your work is accepted you will be asked to sign a contract confirming that you agree with this. The firm told SFcrowsnest.com this is the only way that Abaddon Press can work.

You will also be asked to sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA).

Abaddon Press stated they will pay a flat fee of around £3,000-4,000 for each 90,000 word book. This will be split between a returnable advance on acceptance of a proposal part of the remainder part way through and the balance on delivery of the manuscript to deadlines

Please Note: Abaddon Press do insist upon on-time delivery, and there will be a reduction in the entire fee for lateness. More details can be found in their contracts. Abaddon Press assess the length using the Microsoft Word count feature.

In the first instance Abaddon Press will request a full, one page synopsis. Please also include a much shorter synopsis, 20-40 words max of the sort that instantly grabs the reader's attention. Should this appeal, Abaddon Press will ask for a full chapter summary and a sample chapter. If that is judged suitable they'll progress to setting a deadline for the delivery of the full book.

If you are interested in the above, sign up by letting the publisher know who you are and what you might want to do.

If you have any specific original plots outline them as short (three sentence max.) summaries. If you have any previous experience of being published please give them a list of any previous published works, samples of your work can also prove to be useful.
