SFF agent John Jarrold has concluded a world rights deal for three fantasy novels by UK author Stephen Hunt with Sarah Hodgson of HarperCollins UK's Voyager imprint, for a high five-figure sum in pounds sterling, after an auction. Hunt's first novel, For The Crown And The Dragon, won a WH Smiths Fresh Talent prize in the 1990s, since when he has created the SF Crowsnest website, which regularly appears in polls for the leading genre site internationally. He works as an Associate Director for an international banking house. The first novel in his new series, The Court Of The Air, is an imaginative tour de force, featuring spies, gods, gentleman assassins and inhuman characters - both villainous and heroic - as well as two engaging young protagonists who each have to discover why their lives are under threat.
'I'm delighted to have done this deal,' said John Jarrold. 'Stephen was the first client I took on when I started up the agency last year, so there's a symmetry to the fact that this is my first major deal with a UK publisher. Sarah made it clear to us how much the entire company was behind her enthusiastic response to this wonderful book.'
Sarah Hodgson, commissioning editor, said, 'I'm thrilled that Stephen Hunt will be joining Voyager. We don't acquire many new authors but the exceptional quality of this project really stood out. Stephen's an incredibly talented writer and his work is hugely inventive. I was utterly gripped by The Court Of The Air from the first page. The whole team is looking forward to working with Stephen and bringing the books to a wide audience.'
The underbidder was Peter Lavery of Pan Macmillan.
