Sci-Fiction shuts it doors
21/11/2005 Source: Jessica Martin

One of the last paying markets for online science fiction to shut by the end of the year by the Sci-Fi Channel.

Bit of an odd story this. Sci-Fiction - one of the few professional online markets for short fiction (e.g. they pay) - is to close come the new year.

The official statement on the SciFi Channel web site reads: "As scifi.com gears up to expand with exciting new ventures utilising the newest technology, it will discontinue SCI Fiction, the online publishing division of of the site, at the end of 2005."

This is followed by a brief statement from the editor Ellen Datlow over at http://www.scifi.com/scifiction/message.html

This was always Ellen's baby, so maybe she just got bored of winning the Hugo all the time (as if), or had a falling out with the suits at SciFi or something? As for the new ventures et al - what do you think? PodCasting of novels? Exclusive online-only SFF broadcast media, which they might have a taste for after the enormous traffic they've been generating after running the first episode of the new BattleStar series over the web.

Are the SciFi Channel finally getting ready to Napsterise their own lunch before someone else downloads it for free?

That's media convergence for you, it's a funny old thing you know!
