Iron Sky the movie
20/05/2006 Source: Jessica Martin

The next digital film project by the Star Wreck team commences. But will they be able to continue their Star Trek-style parody without writs flying.

Buy Iron Sky in the USA - or Buy Iron Sky in the UK

Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning was released in August 2005, and in a few months it became one of the world's most viewed Finnish films in history. Four million copies have been downloaded worldwide, and, Energia Production is now talking about their next feature-length film, Iron Sky.

The story of Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning is that of a starfleet captain who appoints himself emperor of the world, and goes on a crusade of conquest and mayhem to the ends of the universe. The catch of this sci-fi parody was that it was released online for free, at a time when major distribution companies were still wavering in the face of the new technology.

The Star Wreck continuum will be simmering on the back burner while Energia Productions focuses on new vistas. The new film is called Iron Sky. Its website gives an idea of the visual style, and there is an online forum open for speculation. Updates will be made as the production progresses. Energia is making no predictions about schedules.

Star Wreck was created in cramped student apartments and in the basement of producer Samuli Torssonen over seven years. With the success of the film, the team is now able to work full-time for their own company, Energia Productions Ltd. The command centre for future productions will be the office recently opened in downtown Tampere. A small Star Wreck store operates in the same premises. With the office as their base of operations, the team is working on their next feature film and other productions - foremost among which is an online development platform for communal filmmaking.

In this undertaking, the young production company has recently gained the help of computer technology firm Hewlett-Packard, who have followed the success of Star Wreck with interest. HP have always valued innovation, and decided to pitch in by providing the processing power Energia needs.

Other partners include the American audio company NHT, who have established a beach-head in Tampere, and Magenta Sites will continue to be responsible for Energia's network connections.
