Scifi Channel not to change name 24/08/2006 . Source: Jessica Martin
Forged press release about cable station SciFi Channel changing name to SurgeTV is exposed as fake. SFcrowsnest one of the few SciFi sites to smell a rat and not post the story. Furious StarGate fans believed to have paid for the ruse. SFcrowsnest was one of the many science fiction web sites to receive a press release via the PRweb network about the SciFi Channel changing its name to SurgeTV.
Unlike many of our erstwhile colleagues, we held fire on the story. Something about it just didn't add up - not least when it talked of its audience as the 'nerd demographic'.
Now it looks like the story about The SciFi Channel wanting to rebrand to reflect the fact its audience growth was coming from Pro Wrestling fans and their launch of Mexico's Lucha Libre wrestling series was as bogus as it smelt to us here at the nest.
Now the press release has disappeared from the press release distribution network over at PRweb and quite a few science fiction webmasters have been left with egg on their face. We shall withhold the long list of notables to spare their blushes.
Ouch.
Fans maddened by the announced cancellation of StarGate a week or so ago are believed to be behind the dig.
