Jane Yolen eats fantasy
10/08/2006 Source: Jessica Martin

Take two children's book authors, a healthy dose of fairy tales, a heaping spoonful of original recipes, a pinch of folkloric commentary, and a sprinkling of mischievous illustrations, creative cooking ideas, and stir. The result is Fairy Tale Feasts A Literary Cookbook, a tasty blend of literary wizardry and creative cookery by Jane Yolen and Heidi E.Y. Stemple.

With its combination of storytelling and easy-to-follow recipes, Fairy Tale Feasts aims to charm both adults and children.

From Runaway Pancakes to Brer Rabbit Carrot Soup, from Jack and the Beanstalk's Magic Party Beans to Snow White's Baked Apples, the book features retellings of stories accompanied by breakfast, lunch, and dinner recipes easy enough for kids to make themselves. Sidebars detail the historic roots of each fairy tale and provide information about the ingredients in the recipes and the origins of each dish.

Jane Yolen is the author of 275 books for children and adults, including the Caldecott-winning Owl Moon, The Devil's Arithmetic, and the bestselling How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight. She has been called "the Hans Christian Andersen of America" by Newsweek, and "a modern equivalent of Aesop" by The New York Times Book Review. Her books and stories have won the Caldecott Medal, two Nebula Awards, two Christopher Medals, the World Fantasy Award, three Mythopoeic Fantasy Awards, two Golden Kite Awards, the National Jewish Book Award, and the Association of Jewish Libraries Award.

A professional oral storyteller, poet, adult science fiction writer, and member of the Board of Advisors of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI), Yolen is also a former children's book editor at Harcourt and a former president of The Science Fiction Writers of America.

Heidi E. Y. Stemple, Jane Yolen's daughter, is the author of books and poetry for both children and adults. A former private investigator, Stemple lives with her family in Hatfield, Massachusetts. Jane Yolen has also created books with her sons, writer and musician Adam Stemple, and photographer Jason Stemple.
