Clarion to Move to the University of California at San Diego
09/09/2006 Source: Jessica Martin

The Board of Directors of the Clarion Foundation announced today that the Clarion Writers Workshop will be moving from Michigan State University to the University of California at San Diego beginning with the 2007 workshop.

"We are pleased to begin this new chapter in the Clarion story," said Kate Wilhelm, Chair of the Foundation. "We have not made the decision to move lightly and we regret that our long association with MSU has come to an end. However, we see many exciting new opportunities for the workshop at UCSD."

The Writers-in-Residence for the 2007 workshop will be Gregory Frost, Mary Anne Mohanraj, Jeff VanderMeer, Cory Doctorow, Ellen Kushner and Delia Sherman.

As a result of cuts at the state level, over the past few years MSU has been forced to reduce its support for Clarion. The Clarion Foundation has redoubled its fundraising efforts and is currently in the midst of its annual charity auction on eBay (see www.theclarionfoundation.org/auction.htm for details), which will run through October 8th.

With the move to UCSD, the Foundation will be able to target the funds it raises for scholarships. According to Kim Stanley Robinson, who has been Clarion's liaison with UCSD, "Their offer is for five years, giving the Clarion Foundation full creative control of the program while guaranteeing to pay for all its operating costs. We think that this will give the workshop the long term stability it needs." Questions about the move to UCSD can be addressed to ksr@davis.com.

Founded in 1968 by Robin Scott Wilson at Clarion State College in Clarion, PA, the Clarion Workshop is the one of the most highly regarded writing workshops in the country. The Clarion Foundation will begin processing applications for its Fortieth Anniversary Workshop in January 2007.

Friends and alumni of Clarion will find further announcements about the move to UCSD on the Clarion Foundation's website at www.theclarionfoundation.org
