Igor grows new parts
24/10/2006 Source: Jessica Martin

Jeremy Piven and Saturday Night Live alum Molly Shannon have joined the voice cast of the CG-animated horror comedy Igor. Piven will voice the role of Dr. Schadenfreude, Igor's nemesis, with Shannon voicing the role of Eva, a giant, indestructible monster invented by Igor. They join Steve Buscemi, John Cleese, and Christian Slater.

Piven won an Emmy this year for his shark-type Hollywood superagent role on HBO's breakout comedy hit Entourage. His other credits include Keeping Up with the Steins, Two for the Money, Old School and he voiced the role of Harv, Lightning's manager, in the animated movie Cars. Shannon's credits include the box office hit Talladega Nights, Scary Movie 4 and How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

Igor, distributed by The Weinstein Company, aims to be an irreverent comedy which brings a new twist to the classic monster genre. It tells the story of a mad scientist's hunchbacked lab assistant who has big dreams of becoming a scientist in his own right and winning the coveted first place award at the annual Evil Science Fair.

When it comes to Mad Scientists, Piven's character, Dr. Schadenfreude, is a dim bulb and a total fraud. As the reigning champion, he's only won the Evil Science Fair in the past because his mother built his projects for him. But this year she refuses, and he is desperate enough to try to steal Dr. Glickenstein's invention.

Shannon's character Eva could be the most Evil Invention ever with one hitch: she doesn't have an Evil bone in her body. Worse, all she wants to be is an actress. With the Evil Science Fair a week away, Igor must find a way to make Eva evil or face the dire consequences of Last Place and expulsion from the kingdom.

"Jeremy and Molly are incredibly gifted comedic actors," Tony Leondis, Igor's director, told SFcrowsnest. "Their versatile and dynamic voice talents are perfect matches for Dr. Schadenfreude and Eva."

Buscemi (Charlotte's Web, Fargo) will voice the role of Scamper, Igor's super intelligent and ill-tempered lab rabbit, Cleese (Shrek 2 & 3, A Fish Called Wanda) as Dr. Glickenstein, Igor's evil master, and Slater (Windtalkers, Untamed Heart) in the role of Igor.

Animation veteran Leondis (The Prince of Egypt, Kronk's New Groove, Lilo & Stitch 2) is set to direct the screenplay by Chris McKenna (American Dad). Eraklis is producing along with seasoned animation executive Max Howard, who has collaborated on animated blockbusters such as Disney's Lion King and Aladdin, and Space Jam and The Iron Giant.
