Science fiction comes to Birmingham 21/10/2006 . Source: Jessica Martin
Novacon 36 is being held from the 10th November 2006 to the 12th November 2006 at the Quality Hotel, Bentley, Walsall, near Birmingham. It is a long running annual convention for SF and Fantasy fans. The first Novacon was organised in 1971 as a one-off event by the Aston University Science Fiction Group, but its success led to the convention being adopted by the neighbouring Birmingham SF Group from 1972 onwards.
It has always had a good reputation in the field - being the type of convention where both fans and professionals can mingle and meet. The guest (this year Ken MacLeod) normally does a few talks or panels, and there are other panels and events such as auctions, raffles, book launches, plus the infamous Nova awards, where the best of the genre are announced. There is a dealers' room where you can pick up things like books and magazines, both best-selling and obscure.
The Quality is a perfect convention hotel, with everything close at hand on a single level. This makes for a compact event where you'll always know what's going on, be able to find people, and it doesn't lose the atmosphere of the weekend by spreading fans thinly about the site.
Membership still available at £36 in advance, or £40 on the door. Dayrates also available (see below). For info on this and booking rooms etc, please email cook.vicky@yahoo.co.uk or visit www.novacon.org
