Fantasy author Mark Chadbourn will publish the prequel to his Age of Misrule books in graphic novel format.

Book of Shadows will come out in two comic books in April 2006 from Image Comics, before being collected in hardcover for the bookstore market in 2007. Painted artwork will be provided by artist Bo Hampton, best-known for his work on Batman.

Chadbourn, the winner of the British Fantasy Award in 2003, told SFcrowsnest: "I know it's a gamble - some of my readers may find it hard to adjust to the graphic novel format. But I've been a comic book fan all my life and I think there's enormous potential in the medium, that many novelists have not recognised.

"It's a particularly fertile medium for fantasy authors, especially when you're partnered with a remarkable artist who can bring your dreams alive. When I was approached by comics editor Joe Pruett to try this path I jumped at the chance. So Book of Shadows is the first - more stories will follow. There is a lot of pressure. Readers have been demanding a prequel to The Age of Misrule sequence since it was published, to discover the background to many of the mysteries revealed in those books."

Both World's End and Always Forever were runners up for the August Derleth Award for Best Novel, the British Fantasy Society's top prize.

Book of Shadows prepares the ground for the premise of The Age of Misrule. The gods of Celtic mythology have returned to our modern world after an absence of 2,300 years. The Age of Reason is crumbling in the face of magic and mysticism as the gods manipulate humanity in a coming war against their age-old race enemies, the demonic, shape-shifting Fomorii.

Chadbourn added: "One of my hopes is that it will get regular book readers picking up some comics and graphic novels because there's a lot of fantastic work being done in that medium at the moment. And for that matter, that some comic book readers will dip in to a few books without pictures!"

It's the start of a busy year for Chadbourn. His new novel, Jack of Ravens, will be published by Victor Gollancz in June 2006 and an omnibus edition of The Age of Misrule will be published in October 2006.

Anticipating that some of his readers may not have the first idea how to locate the comics, Chadbourn has done a deal with a UK comic shop, Ace Comics, which will take orders by email, phone or post and mail out the relevant issues. Full details on his website over at www.markchadbourn.net
