Sarah Micklem, author of the fantasy novel Firethorn, is the guest on the January 2006 episode of Fast Forward. Buy Firethorn in the USA - or Buy Firethorn in the UK  In the interview, Micklem talks about the complex religious and societal systems she created to drive the actions of the characters in her book. She also discusses the difficulty of keeping track of those systems while writing, noting that "my advice to any writer starting out is never to start with 36 godlike beings or avatars because it's just too many!"
The January episode of Fast Forward also features Colleen Cahill reviewing the book Black Juice, a collection of stories by Margo Lanagan.
In this month's media segment Marianne Petrino reviews The Cat Returns, an anime feature film by Studio Ghibli.
Fast Forward: Contemporary Science Fiction is a monthly half-hour television series about the genres of science fiction, fantasy, and horror. Fast Forward is produced by D.G. Productions through the facilities of Arlington Independent Media in Arlington, Virginia. The show has been in production since 1989 and can be viewed on cable systems in the Virginia counties of Arlington, Fairfax, and Loudoun, as well as Baltimore City in Maryland.
