Arthur C. Clarke award shortlist
23/01/2007 Source: Stephen Hunt

Stephen Hunt reports from the Clarke Award shortlist evening in London. Jon Courtenay Grimwood, M. John Harrison, Lydia Millet, Jan Morris, Adam Roberts and Brian Stableford are the six authors short listed for this year’s Arthur C Clarke Awards for 2007, the UK prize for SFF literature.

As announced during a very congenial evening in London’s Pitcher and Piano private upstairs bar, the six short listed novels are:

- End of the World Blues: Jon Courtenay Grimwood (Gollancz) - Jon was standing by the chap making the official shortlist announcement when his name was read out, so there were some amused cries of fix, fix!

- Nova Swing: M. John Harrison (Gollancz)

- Oh Pure and Radiant Heart: Lydia Millet (Heinemann)

- Hav: Jan Morris (Faber and Faber)

- Gradisil: Adam Roberts (Gollancz)

- Streaking: Brian Stableford (PS Publishing)

Tom Hunter, the administrator of the awards, announced at the evening: 'This year's shortlist stands as a snapshot of the best of the UK's science fictional literature: it's a list that makes clear our ongoing fascination with future possibilities and the power of human imagination, and it echoes the rich heritage that the Arthur C Clarke Award has created science its inception in 1986.'

There were quite a few familiar faces at the evening, including Jon Courtenay Grimwood himself in a natty pinstripe jacket, David Langford (who I am afraid I bored rigid about PHP coding when I found out he was getting jiggy with PHP scripting for ansible.co.uk: yes, he does his own webmastering too), and Christopher Priest and his wife, Mr Priest being happy to spill the beans with a few tales of what it was like to have his book The Prestige optioned, then made into a movie with Michael Caine et al.

Judges for this year are Niall Harrison and Claire Weaver (British Science Fiction Association), Pad Cadigan and Graham Sleight for the Science Fiction Foundation, Dave Palmer for the Science Museum, while Paul Billinger represents the Clarke awards as the Chair of Judges.

A prize of £2007 will be awarded to the winner of the novel of the year in May this year. The winner will be announced on Wednesday 2nd May at an awards ceremony held on the opening night of the Sci-Fi-London Film Festival: www.sci-fi-london.com

The awards crew have also got a new web site over at http://www.ClarkeAward.com which sounds like it’s worth checking out.
