Novacon 37 update 20/05/2007 . Source: Jessica Martin
Novacon is the UK's longest-established regional science fiction convention, held every autumn since 1971. It's built around a single-stream programme mixing both literary items and more informal events, with deliberate emphasis on social contact between sf fans and genre professionals. Novacon 37 has announced that British science fiction author Charlie Stross has accepted our invitation to be our guest of honour. His novels The Jennifer Morgue and A Family Trade will conveniently be out in time for the convention (from Orbit and Pan MacMillan, respectively), just two of eight books by Charlie scheduled to hit UK bookshops this year. All members of Novacon 37 will also receive a limited-edition souvenir chapbook written by Charlie.
The first true science fiction convention was held in Leeds in 1937 (attendees included 19 year-old sf fan Arthur C Clarke). Novacon 37 will celebrate that event's seventieth anniversary, both through our programme and via a series of essays by Peter Weston and Mark Plummer in their three progress reports and their programme book.
This year Novacon will be held from the 2nd-4th November 2007 at the Quality Hotel, Bentley near Walsall. Further information can be found by visiting www.novacon37.org.uk or email cook.vicky@yahoo.co.uk
