Hilldiggers
05/06/2007 Source: Jessica Martin

Neal was born in Billericay and starting writing SF and fantasy at 16. After a range of jobs that landed him in the machine industry, he began the Hadrim trilogy, and wrote his first version of Fool's Mate. Neal has had great acclaim and success for his books; Gridlinked, The Skinner, The Line of Polity, Cowl, Brass Man and The Voyage Of The Sable Keech.

Hilldiggers tells the story of two warring planets in the same solar system who find a ‘cosmic superstring’. This object explodes into four separate pieces each packed full of alien technology, or a form of life. They’re put into a secure space station where a female research scientist becomes pregnant and has quads. Meanwhile the hilldiggers - massive space dreadnoughts - have devastated one of the planets.

The quads grow up and assume positions of power but one of them will eventually become more powerful than anyone could possible imagine, thanks to the hilldiggers.
