Write Fantastic in Brum 01/08/2007 . Source: Jessica Martin
In September 2007 the Birmingham Science Fiction Group are welcoming the Write Fantastic to speak to them. The Write Fantastic is an initiative by authors to introduce fantasy fiction to readers who have never tried the genre, and to show those who have drifted away the breadth and depth in current fantasy writing.
They seek to raise the profile of fantasy writing within the media; in bookshops; in libraries; in schools; at writers’ circles and reading groups; at conferences, conventions and literary festivals. They give readings, talks and lectures, run workshops, and participate in panels and question & answer sessions.
Activities like this have become very much a part of the novelist’s job in recent years, but generally on an individual and haphazard basis. By pooling their skills, resources and experience, they believe they can have a more significant effect. Included in this group are Sarah Ash , Chaz Brenchley , Mark Chadbourn, Juliet E McKenna, Deborah J Miller , Stan Nicholls and Jessica Rydill and between them, their work covers the gamut of fantasy writing from orcs and dragons, through high heroic swords and sorcery to reimagining of myth and history, and the magics of matter, mind and spirit. They will be in Brum of Friday 14th September. Coming to talk then will be all except Mark and Sarah who sadly could not attend this time.
The others will have plenty to say however, and will happily answer any questions about the genre, writing, and pretty much anything else.
This will take place at the Britannia Hotel, New Street, Birmingham, from 7.45pm. The following night, on the 15th September 2007 the British Fantasy Society will be hosting an Open Night - an informal free social night open to all - and the Write Fantastic will also be appearing at this. 6.30pm onwards at the Cornerhouse pub, Newhall Street, Birmingham.
The 14th Sept event has a small charge of £3 for BSFG members, and £4 to others. More at www.bsfg.freeservers.com or www.thewritefantastic.com
