Andy Sawyer to visit Birmingham Science Fiction Group
14/02/2008 Source: Jessica Martin

In 1993 the Science Fiction Foundation Library found a home in Liverpool, UK. On the 14th March 2008 the notorious Andy Sawyer is attending the BSFG to give an update on what's happened since and explain why old paperbacks, lurid magazines, Hugo awards, fanzines and scribbled bits of paper are an essential part of a library of science fiction.

The meeting is hosted by the Birmingham Science Fiction Group and starts at 7.30-8pm with entry costs: £3 BSFG members, £4 non-members. The meeting will take place in the function room at the Briar Rose Hotel, Bennetts Hill, Birmingham, UK.

Andy Sawyer is the librarian of the Science Fiction Foundation Collection at the University of Liverpool Library , and Course Director of the MA in Science Fiction Studies offered by the School of English . He also teaches an undergraduate module, Speculative Fictions. He is Reviews Editor of Foundation: the International Review of Science Fiction.

Once upon a time he edited Matrix and later Paperback Inferno for the BSFA. Since then he has published widely in academic books and journals such as Extrapolation and the Journal of the Fantastic in the Arts.

He co-edited the collection Speaking Science Fiction (Liverpool University Press, 2000) and was an Advisory Editor for and contributor to the Greenwood Encyclopedia of Science Fiction and Fantasy: Themes, Works, and Wonders edited by Gary Westfahl (Greenwood Press, 2005).

He recently supplied notes for new Penguin Classics editions of several H. G. Wells novels, which was a lot of fun, as was going to Finland to talk about The Enchanted Duplicator to an audience of serious academics.

His most recent publication was Ramsey Campbell’s Haunted Liverpool in: Murphy M and Rees-Jones, D ed(s). Writing Liverpool : Essays and Interviews. (Liverpool University Press, 2007); and he is currently writing entries for far too many forthcoming reference books.

He is still writing for the BSFA. Sometimes you never learn.
