Bova gets first Ben Bova award
26/03/2008 Source: Jessica Martin

At the first OmegaCon in Birmingham, Alabama, Ben Bova was awarded the inaugural Ben Bova Award for his career in science fiction writing. Though Bova is the first to receive this honor, in subsequent years, the Ben Bova Award will be given to writers in a variety of publishing categories, chosen by a panel of judges.

The award was presented to Bova at the closing ceremonies of the convention, with a presentation from first-time science fiction author and a longtime fan of Bova's, William Drinkard (author of Elom, Tor Books, March 2008). Claire Eddy, Senior Editor at Tor, as well as Alexis Saarela, Publicity Manager, Liz Gorinsky, Associate Editor, and Kristin Sevick, Editorial Assistant, were on hand to celebrate the work of Ben Bova.

Eddy told SFcrowsnest.com, "We at Tor Books are extremely pleased to be here at the presentation of the first Ben Bova Award. Ben Bova has been, and continues to be, a seminal force in the field of hard science fiction. As the editor who took over the magazine Analog following John W. Campbell's death, he helped shape the careers of countless hard SF writers and continued the tradition of publishing stories that fed our passions for and curiosity about the world around us and helped show us that dreaming about a thing is sometimes the first step in making that dream a reality. Going on to be the editor in chief at Omni magazine, he brought the ideas of how science might impact our daily lives to a much larger audience during the magazine's heyday. He is the President Emeritus of the National Space Society and a past President of Science-fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA). And did I mention he's one heck of a fine SF author himself? I can't think of anyone who more deserves this recognition and we congratulate him on both the award and a lifetime of wonderful stories."
