Stephen’s first book, the fantasy novel For The Crown and the Dragon, won the WH Smith New Talent Award in 1994. The novel and its related short fiction started a sub-genre - ‘flintlock fantasy’ - which mixes elements of Georgian and Napoleonic history with the conventions of the fantasy universe. His short fiction has appeared in various UK and international genre based magazines.

His last novel Court Of The Air was released last year to huge critical acclaim. The Kingdom Beyond The Waves is an adventure tale set in a Victorian style world. Professor Amelia Harsh is obsessed with finding the lost civilization of Camlantis, a city from pre-history said to have conquered hunger, war and disease and created a perfect pacifist society. But she doesn’t realise that her quest for the perfect society is about to bring her own world to the brink of destruction.
