Down the rabbit hole

BookRabbit, a new online service that dynamically connects readers, authors and publishers through the books they own, will shortly be launching its website, bookrabbit.com to all you science fiction and fantasy-loving book fans. BookRabbit wants to stoke up people's excitement of buying books by allowing them to make unusual connections to books through their interaction with other readers on the BookRabbit website.
"Our mission is to bring the UK's bookcases to life," said Kieron Smith, managing director, BookRabbit. "Rather than relying on computer generated recommendations, our technology will enable customers to burrow deeper into their interest areas and engage with authors, publishers and other readers."
BookRabbit's technology allows readers to disregard the BIC (Book Industry Classification) and re-classify the entire book catalogue (3.1 million of the books available). Users will be encouraged to upload images of their book shelves and book cases (at home, work, etc).
"The recognition technology used by BookRabbit will identify the spines of the books in the image to create a virtual bookcase which allows users to create and edit their own book catalogues as well as creating new categories to create a more relevant, current book catalogue for all users," said Will Jones, IT director, BookRabbit.
Initially the classifications will be monitored and regulated by BookRabbit, with the aim of reaching a self monitoring Wiki model in due course. Through their shared bookcases, users will also be able to interact with fellow readers to make recommendations and impart common interests.
BookRabbit is aiming to be available to SFF fans shortly.
