David Walton of Pennsylvania has won the 2nd annual Jim Baen Memorial Short Story Contest with his sci-fi story Letting Go.

Toni Weisskopf, at Baen told SFcrowsnest.com, "I was also favorably impressed by the positive spirit toward space science and the future found in each story," she said. "Space development was one of Jim Baen's passions."

"Letting Go will be published in Jim Baen's Universe magazine, and Mr. Walton will receive standard professional payment rates for the story," said JBU editor-in-chief and scifi novelist, Eric Flint, one of the three judges.

The other two judges were Mike Resnick and Baen Books senior editor, Hank Davis.

First runner-up was Skipping Stones by Darwin Garrison of Fort Wayne, Indiana and second runner up was Self Defence by British writer Charlie Allery.

Each of the three winners will receive a subscription to Jim Baen's Universe, a membership in the National Space Society, and assorted Baen and NSS merchandise.

The awards will be presented by contest administrator and fellow science fiction writer, William Ledbetter at the 27th International Space Development Conference, in Washington D.C. on Saturday May 31st 2008.
