I'd buy that for a dollar: Robocop set to reboot as a new scifi movie
25/07/2008 Source: Jessica Martin

MGM has just signed up director Darren Aronofsky to direct a new science fiction movie in its Robocop series. David Self wil be writing. Aronofsky was the director of The Fountain, while Self was the writer of Road to Perdition. The film is due for release in 2010.

Mary Parent at MGM told SFcrowsnest, “Darren is undeniably one of the most talented, original and visceral film makers, and David is one of the greatest writers in Hollywood. All of us at MGM couldn't be more excited.”

Phoenix Pictures’ Mike Medavoy added, “After making the first ROBOCOP at Orion more than 20 years ago, I’m thrilled to be helping to return this character to the screen with our partners at MGM and through the eyes of Darren Aronofsky and David Self.”

Phoenix Pictures’ Mike Medavoy, Arnold Messer, Brad Fischer and David Thwaites will produce the new Robocop. Darren Aronofsky’s film credits include Pi, Requiem for a Dream and The Fountain. He is completing

the feature, The Wrestler with Mickey Rourke, Marisa Tomei and Evan Rachel Wood. David Self's credits include 13 Days and Road To Perdition. He wrote God of War for Universal, to which Brett Ratner is attached to direct, and was a writer on Universal's Wolfman currently in production.

RoboCop was a 1987 action film directed by Paul Verhoeven. The film had actor Peter Weller as a put-upon cop in a crime-ridden Detroit, Michigan, in a dark cyberpunk-light future (the police are privatised).

For anyone who has been asleep for the last century, RoboCop was the tale of a police officer who is brutally killed and subsequently re-created as a cyborg by a greedy US-controlling corporation, aka RoboCop.

It spawned two (increasingly worse) sequels, four cheesy television series and two comic book adaptations. The character of RoboCop was obviously inspired by Judge Dredd
