David Anthony Durham's excellent fantasy novel from Doubleday, Acacia: The War With the Mein, is heading for fantasy movie land after striking a deal with film company Relativity Media. Buy Acacia: The War With the Mein in the USA - or Buy Acacia: The War With the Mein in the UK Michael De Luca and Ryan Kavanaugh are to produce.
Acacia: The War with the Mein was a 2007 novel by US writer David Anthony Durham. It was his first push into epic fantasy, although the novel shares a lot of the style of his non-genre output such as his historical work, Pride of Carthage.
Andrew Grant will write the film's screenplay while Zach Schiff-Abrams, will be executive producer.
In the book, Leodan Akaran, ruler of the Known World, has inherited generations of fragile peace and prosperity. He is lord of an empire called Acacia and has four children, who he tries to protect from the harsh realities of the drug and slave trade on which the empire's wealth depends.
An assassin sent from a race called the Mein, in exile in a polar stronghold in the north, murders Leodan while various enemies unleash surprise attacks across the empire. His children escape and begin a quest to restore the empire as a clean democracy.
