News comment by GF Willmetts. The BBC announced on Saturday 03 January 2009 that the eleventh lead actor in 'Doctor Who' is to be twenty-six year-old Matt Smith. The way things are going, the thirteenth regeneration won't have been born yet as the Doctor becomes increasingly younger. Buy Doctor Who in the USA - or Buy Doctor Who in the UK Considering that actor David Tennant still has another year to run as the Doctor, one has to wonder why announce so soon. Presumably to pre-empt any newspapers getting wind of the story as well as cut down on any speculation as to whom it would be. Saying that, the converse could be true as well as fans are more likely to have a year to speculate as to whether the decision was a wise one or not.
This has happened with every regeneration and actor who has played the role and I doubt if this will ever change. We had faith when Chris Eccleston changed into David Tennant and the same has to hold true this time. It is better to comment after seeing the performance and give Matt Smith his time.
From my own perspective, despite Smith's youth he does look other-worldly with his high forehead, slightly beetle-brow, spruce of wild dark hair and pale complexion. Give him a pair of hearts and you could believe him to be a certain Time Lord. Certainly a match to tie in with producer/writer Steven Moffat's likely darker tales to come. 2009 is going to be a long year.
