The prolific pair are back and sharing a book again.
The difference this time is that we’re also seeing a lot of really
early Boris Vallejo material this time around including some of
the ‘Nightmare’ covers he painted back in the early 70s.
It’s rather interesting contrasting the Boris of then to now. The
reproduction in this book shows how close he was to the canvas grain
in the early days compared to the smooth transaction of today.
There is an interesting selection of Vallejo’s work here. Compared
to the previous book, I didn’t always think his backgrounds were
as precise as I’ve seen in his other work but one has to ride with
what you’re commissioned to paint. In comparison, seeing some
of the early Julie Bell also indicates how far she’s developed.
Her early work showed a common problem a lot of artists have in
painting hands. They’re less precise compared to later. Still, it’s
a good lesson for all you fan artists out there that painting has
to develop.
You’re not instantly there with your craft. What surprised me most
about Julie Bell’s work this time is the almost photographic quality
of her modern fabric painting which is sure to be explored in future
commissions.
With a large fan base, Vallejo and Bell books are an automatic
sell-out. With this book showing a selection of work that hasn’t
been combined into book format, this is sure to be a winner and
a quick sell-out.
Don’t wait for a second edition.
