Through
a little mix-up, we didn’t receive this book until much later than
normal and as you can judge by the number of pages, is also an extremely
dense read consisting of 26 short stories or novelettes.
The
book needs a little qualification as this is what is regarded as
the cream of the crop from 2001 from various magazines.
Oddly enough, they are all written by professional
SF writers with nary a taste of a newbie amongst them.
Although that might be disheartening for any neo-writer
trying to sell to the publications involved, it’ll at least give
you an idea of the standards they are looking for.
Compared to # 14, I have to confess there was less
of a struggle in reading from cover to cover without taking a break
to read something else. That has to be a good sign.
More so that a couple of the last stories ‘Maybe Some
Time’ by Brenda W. Clough and ‘The Human Front’ by Ken MacLeod were
also my favourites. The first dealing with the adjusting of a time
traveller to living in a future and the second with an alternative
reality in such a realistic fashion.
That’s not to say the rest didn’t have any redeeming
qualities. If anything, the selection is varied enough to ensure
there should be something for everyone here.
Probably of most importance is editor Dozois's review
of SF in 2002, covering a wide-range of areas even if we were neglected
again on the Internet sites.
Not that we’re after fame, mind you, but it does raise
some odd questions of the people who help compile his information
aren’t given the full picture about the most popular SF search engine
on the Net.
Whatever.
There are so few SF anthology books around these days,
that any around should be supported and at the price above isn’t
going to break your bank balance in buying a copy.
