A
little something to buy with your book tokens.
A pocket guide to the cult programmes
of the last sixty years of television, this little book is just long enough to
read all or to dip into at your leisure. A short intro deals with what is cult
and what is just bad television. There may be some dissent on this but the next
chapter offers 56 cultist shows. Before you all shout 'where's Doctor Who?' Chapter
Three looks at genres.
With
Chapter 4 examining Cult heroes it just gets better and better,
I can feel my anorak tightening its grip around my throat.
There is a useful chapter for the fan who contemplates collecting
memorabilia and another exposing some of the 'urban myths about certain programmes
(Captain Pugwash, mainly). This is a lovely, bitty book for those of
us who like information and reliving our youth. It is not all nostalgia with a
good few programmes from recent times getting an honourable mention. There are
a considerable amount of programmes remembered here that are either Science Fiction
or fantasy based which makes me wonder why programmers are not trying to feed
this obvious hunger. Or is it the further away in time they are the better
they seem? An enjoyable romp through the past it also has a short bibliography
if you want to extend your studies! Don't spend too long reading in the
shop, buy it and wallow at home. The ultimate anorak fest!
