Well.
What can I say? How do I describe this book? What's it about?
A
number of words timidly raise their hands. What's it about? The
darker side of love. Obsession. Pain. Betrayal. Self-delusion.
Death...
As for how to describe it...? Well, I could call it 'sick' but
that doesn't do it justice. It's unpleasant, yes. The editor's avowed
intention was to 'put together an anthology of love stories that
display the darker, nastier side of affection' and he's certainly
succeeded. Some of these stories are really nauseating.
Some of them are very funny, in
a sickening sort of way. A few are thoroughly chilling. One of them even has a
happy ending. Well, I thought it was happy, anyway, which isn't to say that everyone
will... A couple of them have really irritating typos, silly things that the
proof-reader should have picked up on right away. A few of them start off
well, and then peter away anti-climactically. The quality of the writing is variable
(understandable given the range of authors represented) though the overall standard
is the high side of reasonable. So, who would enjoy it? Well, it's
not the sort of book you give to your lover, especially if they already like playing
with knives or have told you that you'll both be together forever. Horror
fans will mostly likely enjoy it. Fans of Mills and Boon most certainly will not.
I'd say it's a must for anyone who wants to read a decidedly different take on
the subject of love. So buy it. Go on - I dare you!
