One thing that can't be denied about these
Mammoth books, they are excellent value for money even if only half
the stories appeal to you.
In this particular case, I would say more than two-thirds
will appeal to each of you as most will be recognised by name.
Ranging from Edgar Pangborn, Connie Willis, Hal Clement,
William Tenn, Jack London, Robert Silverberg to Harlen Ellison amongst
its 23 authors in stories that are either short or novelette in
size.
I've
only see a few of them in recent anthologies so you're not likely
to get many duplications. The most surprising read was Jack London's
'The Scarlet Plague'.
With the SARS crisis in the news as I read this story,
he really brought home the effects of a world-wide plague with so
few people left in its wake returning to their most primitive routes.
Totally riveting.
What can I say about the rest of the stories without
missing any of the others out?? These are really a scattering of
SF material from the last century with more to follow in Volume
Two.
A truly delightful read including lengthy editorial
notes about each writer which, if you haven't encountered them before,
should point you in the right direction to try more of their material.
A volume you can read from cover to cover and come away knowing
you've read some truly classic SF material.
Did I say I enjoyed this book?
