This
book is a series of standalone stories book-ended by two stories
about Buffy.
'All That You Do Comes Back to Unto Thee, Sunnydale, California,
1999': A cautionary tale about what happens when a little retribution
becomes a threat to the whole of Sunnydale.
'Lady
Shobu, Sagami Province, Japan, 980': A Japanese slayer, (think Disney's
Mulan) operates within the strict constraints of her society.
'Abomination, Beauport, Brittany, France, 1320': A slayer forgets
her duty is solely to the cause and brings horrific death to a village
in 17th century Brittany.
'Blood and Brine, The Caribbean, 1661': An up-lifting tale about
life on the high seas by the author who edited the novelisations
of 'Cutthroat Island'- a movie about a female pirate...
'The Ghost of Slayers Past, London, England, 1843': A slayer spin
on Dickens' 'A Christmas Carol', there is not a particularly strong
story to back this up but watch out for a guest appearance by Buffy!
'The New Watcher, Atlanta, Georgia, 1864': Set in the American
Civil War, another tale where the slayer is forced to live as a
man to subvert society's expectations. When a new watcher arrives
she has to consider her future.
'House of the Vampire, London, England, 1897': Set in London, this
tale draws on the Dracula legend and that of Jack the Ripper. Owing
something to Bram Stoker, it also tackles the question of the 'Scoobies'
being a danger to the Slayer.
'The War Between the States, New York City, New York, 1922': What
it's like when you are not the chosen one...Sally Jean wants the
freedom of her friend Ardita has but does not realise it comes at
a price.
'Stakeout on Rush Street, Chicago, Illinois, 1943': A noirish look
at the life of a female private eye who also happens to be the Slayer.
Co-written by Max Collins who created the graphic novel of 'Road
to Perdition'.
'Again, Sunnydale, California, 1999' written by Jane Espenson:
one of the best screenwriters for the ‘Buffy’ series, this looks
at Buffy and her friends being trapped in younger versions of themselves.
This deals with the pain of loss for Buffy faced with choosing to
save her mother and losing her sister Dawn forever.
These nine tales of slayers through the ages pretty much concentrate
on the human dilemmas that face our super-heroes. The stories stand
up well together and the dovetailing of two Buffy stories will also
help sales.
This is the second volume so it's entirely possible there are more
to come. At approx. 40 pages each these stories do not make up a
huge volume so it's also likely that as usual they will appear in
one large bargain priced volume if you can bear to wait!
