Refining
the essential ingredients for a successful TV series is one of the
hardest things for writers and directors of the current hit shows.
It certainly seems clear that they must make the viewers remember
the series even when it's off air.
With the extreme slowness of DVD and video release for American
shows, it is up the novelisations and original novels to make an
impact on the viewer in downtime.
So
this is Part 4 of the quadrology of books released before Season
2 aired on BBC2 this year, hinting at the sort of directions the
series will be taking as they move away from the 'monster a week'
scenario.
In this short novel, the group discover the bodies of some school
friends in the pond of their family farm. On the same day, Lionel
Luthor, father of Lex, is kidnapped.
Clark finds out that Lana was close friends with Danny who has
been brutally killed alongside his family. He must attempt to use
his super-powers, without his friends realising, to crack this difficult
case.
This time, the novel concentrates on the group's relationships
and how Lex fits into the group or doesn't. It also continues to
focus on Lex's ambivalent relationship with his father, who brought
him up without love. The programme certainly seems as interested
in Lex's development into super-villain as it is into Clark's adoption
of the Superman role.
A short but professional produced transcript of a potential episode
in the series. It continues to look at the group's dynamics and
focuses far less on the superpowers For once, kryptonite barely
gets a mention and that is a refreshing change.
Once again, it does not change anything in the series but if it
does its job, viewers will tune in once more as Clark Kent moves
closer to becoming the super-hero we know and already love.
