Six
young people are selected to join an elite private school. Each
one comes from a strikingly different background. Together they
will form the Bond team who will pass or fail Spy High together.
The time is the near future. It is almost but not quite like the
present.
Bond
team are not doing well. If they fail the next test they will all be thrown out.
Sent out to camp in the forest as a team building exercise they discover there
is something rather nasty lurking outside the tents. It isn't human but it used
to be. Someone is performing pretty gruesome experiments with human DNA and he's
like to use the Bond team for the next round.
This book is part one
of a series of 6 to be released over the next few months. With the plethora of
spy stories for young adult reader and film-goers it is hard to see which one
will stand out sufficiently. Some of you may be familiar with the 'Alex Rider'
stories by Anthony Horowitz, a man with satisfactory writing credits under his
belt. A.J. Butcher has written these books with a teenage audience in mind. They
should appeal to boys and girls. There are hints of romance, lots of gadgetry
to keep the boys interested and a nicely paced plot. With potentially intriguing
character traits in the characters that promise some revealing moments in later
novels the book sets up the series well.

Episode 2: The Chaos Connection by A.J. Butcher pub:
Atom/Times Warner. 245 page enlarged paperback. Price: £ 5.00 (UK). $10.00
(CAN). ISBN: 1-904233-14-7
The
second episode follows on from 'The Frankenstein Experiment' above and the time
frame is shortly afterwards. There are cracks in the team when Ben demands too
much of Lori. Her loyalties divided she makes a disastrous attempt to help out
the Bond team but makes things worse when an apparent truce with Solo Team proves
costly.
We learn more about the Domes that Jake was brought up in and
the team are forced to battle a new and potentially lethal enemy-Chaos brings
forth...Nemesis. It is a testing time for Bond team who must pull together
or fall apart and potentially take the world with them.
These books
are a great read for the pre-teens. Possibly a series of films, too...
