'If anything, this Pern novel is setting up the dragonriders for what happens after the thread no longer falls on the planet now the Red Star's orbit has been shifted from its course.

There is also unrest amongst the people as some, calling themselves Abominators, take to terrorist acts against the innovations brought about by the discovery of Avias, the colonisers AI computer, who has now turned itself off but who has revolutionised their technology from Middle Ages to something moving towards 18th century Earth.

The Skies of PernInto this mix comes a comet crash into the southern seas that swamps out many shoreline southern holds. It's still a rough life on Pern. It's also a demonstration how lead characters like F'lar and Lessa are heading towards pensioner age and we focus on their bronze rider son, F'lessan, and his courtship of green rider Tai.

With her son, Todd, taking on the dragon stirrups for future adventures, this might well be considered Anne McCaffrey's...er...dragonsong with Pern, especially as it's been over 3 years since this book has been written.

Saying that, McCaffrey has lost none of her gift with having you falling in love with this reality and the lives of these characters. It might seem daunting when you read the cast list at the beginning but much of the time, it's to keep track of their jobs than personality profiles.

As this book is developing a new track for change on Pern, it might be make it easier for new readers to hook into this reality before exploring the other 16 books.

If you've long-time readers of Pern, then I hope you've been less tardy than this reviewer in catching up on the adventures.
