Detective William Dempsey is on sick leave
from the New York Police Department. Partly because he has a floater,
particles of protein in his eye, and partly because of the cloud
of suspicion that still hang over him.
This
is due to the shooting of Haitian immigrant, Israel Lara. Dempsey
is on a downward spiral, finding solace in pills and drink. Little
does Dempsey know how far down he will fall, becoming tangled up in
the religion of voodoo.
This is a mixture of genres: crime, horror and some futuristic elements
all meet here and it strangely works. At no point does the reality
of the story fail and you get completely caught up in the action
of the plot.
This is important because Shepard is interested in reality and
how we perceive it. You are never quite sure what is really happening
and how it matches the perception of Dempsey. The events are seen
through his eyes and so you can feel the confusion that he feels.
The other main character in the novel is the atmosphere. It dominates,
overshadowing many of the other characters. Whether Dempsey is in
a rave club or in a voodoo church the atmosphere is claustrophobic
and foreboding - like getting lost in a maze when a dense fog is falling.
It makes the novel more compelling.
Floater is a dark and disturbing novel, designed to confuse and
cause intrigue and, like all good designs, it works.
