This 18 story anthology of Arthur Clarke
is the accumulation of his short works covering 1962-72 and covers
a wide-range of ground, space...or sea.
I've often commented to neo-writers to develop their writing skills
in experiementing with the short story format before writing anything
larger. Although Clarke was already writing novels, this book should
be amongst your reading list to appreciate how easy it is to develop
a range.
I
was even surprised to see Clarke had even written a couple joke
pun stories. The nearest you're going to find to aliens here is
the gigantic creatures in the final story, 'A Meeting With Medusa'
in Jupiter's upper atmosphere.
Most of the other concerns are either in the ocean depths as with
'The Shining Ones' or in the Solar system. Many of them deal with
problem-solving in the SF genre. 'Maelstrom II' being a superb case
of what happens when you really don't have much control other than
knowing that you're likely to die as your capsule is on a collision
course with the Moon and you have no propellant.
This is really a decent pot-pourri that will have something for
everyone. I can even see the dangerous sport society eager to go
solar gliding after reading the book title story.
At such a low price, this book is affordable for everyone's pocket.
