You
know how it is. You start reviewing books and neglect your own pile
of books that's been growing over the years. Case in point is this
book.
When I realised there was a new Pern book on the horizon and I
was 5 books behind, I decided to make a determined effort to catch
up which you'll no doubt see the results of in the review column
in the months to come. As the title above should indicate, this
book is really the tale of Robinton, the most significant supporting
character in Pern's main story arc.
This
book covers his early life and the events leading up to the beginning
of 'Dragonflight'.
Through his eyes we meet many of the characters from that book
as they started out. We also meet F'lar and F'nor's father, F'lon,
as he grows up to become Benden's Weyrleader.
The list of characters at the beginning of the book is rather
daunting but no doubt will please many in keeping track of who was
where although I wish it was also sorted by keep, hall, hold and
weyr for quick reference.
Robinton himself had a rather demanding musical composer father
who never really perceived his son as someone capable of being a
better musician than himself. His mother and HarperHall did much
to develop Robinton's talents and we see a lot of the pre-Dragonflight
Pern here.
McCaffrey has always been a comfortable writer to read although
I think in several places, she shied away from the emotional aspect
of the deaths of some characters.
Then again, I also have Robinton's own fate to compare it to in
'All The Weyrs Of Pern' and this might well be internalised and
sparing the reader such impact. This book is very much a standalone
from the main Pern arc. If you haven't tried the Pern books yet,
it might be worth reading as the prequel to 'Dragonflight' before
digging deeply into this reality.
